President Of Panama Claps Back At Trump's Threat To Reclaim Panama Canal

Panama's President José Raúl Mulino fired back at Donald Trump after he suggested the U.S. would take back the Panama Canal, which he claimed was "unfair" to us.

President-elect Donald Trump's first term in office was marked by a foreign policy that involved cozying up to authoritarian adversaries while attacking allies.

He drew criticism for his fawning admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. His second term hasn't even started yet, but it looks to be more of the same.

Trump's already talked about meeting with his "good friend" Vladimir Putin, telling Turning Point USA's AmericaFest:

"President Putin said that he wants to meet with me as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, he attacked Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Greenland with threats of invasion or annexation in speeches and through social media posts.

Regarding Panama, on Saturday Trump posted:

"The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!"
"It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question."
"To the Officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly!"

Trump also told the AmericaFest crowd in Arizona:

"We’re being ripped off at the Panama Canal like we’re being ripped off everywhere else.
"[The United States] foolishly gave it away."

Trump stated:

"If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question."

He also falsely claimed China was controlling the canal. Unwilling to be bullied by Trump or to allow him to spout revisionist history and lies unchallenged, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino responded to the threat with a video message posted to X.

You can watch it with English subtitles here:

President Mulino stated:

"As President, I want to express clearly that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zone belongs to Panama, and will continue to do so."
"The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable."
BREAKING: Panama’s President just HIT BACK at Donald Trump after he threatened the country saying “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and the surrounding area belongs to Panama and will continue belonging so.” Trump is embarrassing the U.S. on the world stage already.

The Panama Canal—a 51-mile (82km) artificial waterway connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific—was begun by colonizing forces at the end of the 19th century, cutting through the foreign occupied Panama Isthmus which was controlled by Colombia at the time. France started work on the canal in 1881, then stopped in 1889 due to engineering problems, a high worker mortality rate, and funding issues.

A canal saved ships a perilous journey around the southern tip of South America, making it especially important to industries shipping goods from the Americas to global markets.

So the United States began their work on the project in 1904—after supporting Panama's independence from Colombia—with the canal opening in 1914. The United States continued their occupation of Panama to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for return of the land to the people of Panama.

After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, Panama reclaimed their unceded territory in 1999. The canal is now managed and operated through the Panamanian government-owned Panama Canal Authority.

Trump responded Sunday in the manner people have come to expect—a pair of petulant Truth Social posts.

People have accused Trump of trying to imitate the strong men he admires.

His first term saw numerous desperate attempts to gain acceptance and praise from dictators Putin and Kim.

While others cite a more basic reason for the attacks on allies.

Petty revenge for perceived slights—like being held accountable for paying taxes.

What could Trump have against Panama? Oh.

@drericding/Bluesky

Aside from Trump's MAGA minions...

...who were unbothered by their dear leader's real motives...

...virtually no one endorsed Trump's attacks on sovereign nations who are longtime United States allies.

He promised to stop russian war in Ukraine in 24 hours after being elected, and have no wars. Now he threatens Canada, Denmark, Panama with occupation of their territories?

More bullshit he will never accomplish like lowering grocery prices, gas prices, unemployment and actually lowering taxes for working Americans.

After the conquest, he should personally plant American flags all along the sides of the canal to remove all doubt that it's America now. He should also dress for the hot and humid weather while also following RFK JR's vaccine guidelines.

Honestly the whole Panama flap, Trump is honest to god scared to death to actually use the military. So no worries Panama. He’s honest to god, scared to death. He’s such a small, weak, whiney, sissy

Trump has threatened to invade via social media the following nations over the past three weeks: Greenland, Mexico, Canada, and Panama.
— Ben Meiselas (@meiselasb.bsky.social) December 22, 2024 at 10:43 PM

The ratified 1977 United States-Panamanian treaty establishing the canal’s permanent neutrality for transit by all nations remains in effect.

As President Mulino stated:

"Panama respects other nations and demands respect."
"The canal will remain in Panamanian hands as an inalienable patrimony of our nation."

Melania Just Held A Bizarre Press Conference To Debunk 'False Smears' Related To Jeffrey Epstein—And Everyone Had The Same Response

First Lady Melania Trump had everyone thinking the same thing after she held a bizarre press conference on Thursday to deny that she had anything but casual ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the late disgraced financier, pedophile, sexual abuser, and sex trafficker.

Mrs. Trump publicly denied any ties to convicted sex offenders Epstein and his procurer Ghislaine Maxwell, saying claims linking her to Epstein are “lies” meant to damage her reputation. She said she met her husband, President Donald Trump at a New York City party in 1998 and did not meet Epstein until 2000, contradicting a witness statement in the Epstein files that alleges Epstein introduced the couple.

Dem Rep. Sarah McBride Perfectly Shames Nancy Mace For Her Transphobic Response To McBride's Condemnation Of Trump

Delaware Democratic Representative Sarah McBride pushed back at South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace after Mace responded with transphobia to McBride's criticism of President Donald Trump's genocidal threat to kill the "whole civilization" of Iran.

Trump has insisted that God supports his war on Iran and declared—before a provisional ceasefire was announced—that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again" ahead of a deadline to bomb Iran’s power plants and bridges that legal scholars and world leaders have said would constitute war crimes.

Comedian Explains How Millennials' Midlife Crises Are Different From Past Generations—And He's Spot On

Don't make promises you cannot keep, unless your goal is to hurt someone.

Millennials know that practically better than anyone. They were fed a long and impassioned series of advice, hyper-focused on the importance of getting a college degree in order to find a good job. They were also force-fed traditionalist ideals of getting married, having kids, and buying a nice house with the money they'd be making from that great job, of course.
