People Share Their First Memory Of The Internet

I remember the beginning.....

Only the simpler times.... well were they simpler? We had to do things like, write letters and lick stamps and send carrier pigeons. Technology has changes life in ways we never thought were possible in good.... and bad ways. Let's discuss the old days, the days when the internet was something we couldn't understand.

Redditor u/XeroAbility wanted us all to share our origin tales of the internet by asking.... What's your first memory of the internet?

What's in a Name?

Giphy

Trying to come up with an AOL screen name in November 1995, then being told I only have 10 minutes to be online because we were paying by the minute. cousin_geri

Dialed....

[dial up sounds] Welcome. You've got mail. S buddy in s buddy out. xopenguin

a/s/l?

I'm 14/m/Cali

God, those aol chat rooms were the best. Looking back they were creepy as heck lol. 292014

Game On.

Probably playing those games on Nickelodeon dot com. CenkwebmDJ

Cartoon Network had the best online games around 2005, give or take a few years. EpicBlueDrop

I played cartoon network too, along with disney. I remember the Scooby Doo game where you are like in a maze with the light where you are. CenkwebmDJ

Sail Away...

Giphy

Trying to look at Sailor Moon artwork. Each picture took 5 minutes to load. bubble-wrap-is-life

Me too! I even had a Sailor Moon webpage. Taught myself HTML and it was in Angelfire. Needless to say, I was not running with the cool kids as a child. anabaena1

Napped.

Napster, ICQ. kissxokissxokill

Yes ICQ. Surprised to just see this. Napster was the best too. mycrapmailis

I still remember my 6 digit ICQ number. sushidrew

"that song"

Hamster dance. a_mandalodon

Instantly brought that song back into my head. Has to be 20 years since I've thought of it. ItIsAContest

Note that "that song" is from Disney's animated Robin Hood but sped up.

Go Back.

Club penguin. MIIKE04

I've always wanted to go back and play it again for nostalgia's sake, but unfortunately we can't do that. Drippygaber

I vividly remember the Search Engine wars of the late 90's. People liked Yahoo, Altavista, or Google like they were sports teams.

Ask Jeeve's had a butler theme.

Google showed you how many pages they had indexed. A google doodle was very, very rare and special.

We bought Pokemon Yellow off of Amazon in 1999. I had to get my second grade teacher to sign a note my mother wrote, because she was CERTAIN she was going to get her card info stolen. She signed it and called my mom and told her about Amazon. It came in two weeks. CleanTemperature8

Approximately 1994....

Giphy

Approximately 1994, I'm 5 years old, older brother tells me to type in boobies. Down the screen drips a woman showing off what I assumed was a wig on her pee pee. Brother tells mom what I did, no more computer. RickGrimesLol

Prodigy.

Using prodigy back in 1990. blipsman

Yes! I was scrolling down just looking for someone to say Prodigy! And now there's a cute little math-practice RPG for kids by the same name, and every time my second grader asks of she can play Prodigy it throws me back in time for a second. HorseAndDragon

Downloaded.

Giphy

In high school in the early 90s a "computer nerd" friend showed me how to download a copy of the script to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Five years later, I met my husband online - much cooler 😉. bubbabearzle

'Dr. Pimple Popper' Star Reveals She Suffered Stroke While Filming Series: 'I Had A Part Of My Brain That Died'

It's already scary to witness a younger person go through a life-changing medical diagnosis, but it's especially jarring to see a medical professional, who presumably knows best about how to care for themselves, go through the same.

Sandra Lee, known as "Dr. Pimple Popper" on Lifetime, is well-known for her bedside manner, medical knowledge and ability to share her knowledge in an accessible way, and, of course, her unique approach to dermatological care.

Rob Schneider Dragged For Criticizing Elizabeth Banks' 'Dangerous Rhetoric' After She Called Out White Female Trump Voters

After actor and filmmaker Elizabeth Banks—who played Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games—called out white women who voted for President Donald Trump, MAGA actor Rob Schneider lashed out against what he referred to as her "dangerous rhetoric."

Those who've read the book and seen the film adaptation of The Hunger Games know that Trinket—known for joyfully announcing, "Happy Hunger Games and the odds may be ever in your favor!"—is a mistress of propaganda for a hostile government that forces teenagers to fight to the death every year to intimidate critics and keep society's poorest and most vulnerable in line. Trinket eventually embraces the rebellion.

Kid Rock Dragged After Offering Massive Discount To His MAGA Festival Due To Abysmal Ticket Sales

Musician Kid Rock has hitched his wagon to president Donald Trump for quite some time now, and it seems he too is in the "find out" stage of that particularly exercise in FAFO.

It seems that when the president you form your entire personality around craters to a catastrophic approval rating even for him, your ship starts to sink too.

Army Secretary Sparks Outrage After Shutting Down Army Social Media Accounts For Honoring Tammy Duckworth's Military Service

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is facing heavy criticism after he ordered that all accounts associated with the Army unit "Soldier for Life" (SFL) be shut down after the unit shared a post on social media celebrating Illinois Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth's military service.

Duckworth is a double amputee who lost both of her legs in combat in 2004 when her Black Hawk helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents.

Trump's Border Czar Ripped For Hypocrisy After Telling Pope Leo To 'Stay Out Of Politics'

President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan was called out for hypocrisy after telling Pope Leo XIV to "stay out of politics" after he clashed with Trump over the widely unpopular war in Iran.

Last week, Pope Leo criticized the war and called on the world "to reject war, especially a war which many people have said is an unjust war, which is continuing to escalate and is not resolving anything."
