MTG Was Temporarily Speaker Of The House In McCarthy's Absence—And Twitter Is Horrified

The MAGA Rep. tweeted that she 'could get used to this' after acting as Speaker Pro Tempore—but critics were not keen on that notion.

Far-right Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene gave us a glimpse of what it might be like if she ever ascends to Speaker of the House--and Twitter is so not about it.

Yesterday, Greene filled in for the Speaker of the House, Republican California Representative Kevin McCarthy, acting as Speaker Pro Tempore while McCarthy was indisposed.

It's a frequently rotated temporary position and is a common occurrence in the House, and essentially means little in the grand scheme of things. Any member of the ruling political party can fill the role, and it's purely a logistical move.

Still, the idea of Speaker of the House Marjorie Taylor Greene is about as horrifying as--well, just about anything you can imagine happening in Washington, and MTG's stint left people online utterly mortified.

Especially given how Greene seemed to relish the power.

Posting a video of her banging the gavel in the House, Greene tweeted:

"I could get used to this…"

Okay, cool it, Greene.

The image of Greene on the House dais was bad enough without the gloating.

Especially because, though the role of Speaker Pro Tempore is largely ceremonial, it signals that Greene has elevated her status within the Republican Party and Congress since first taking office in 2021.

Greene is a close ally of Speaker McCarthy's, and has been placed on two high-level committees since being sworn in for her second term in January: the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and the Committee on Homeland Security.

Which is... well, kind of chilling when you consider she is implicated in the planning and execution of the January 6 insurrection and coup attempt at the Capitol.

But, that's America nowadays. Why hold people accountable when you can just hang back and let them assume seats on two of the most important committees in Congress?

Anyway, given all that, it's perhaps unsurprising that people were... well, frankly nauseated by the sight of MTG acting as Speaker of the House.

And many had just one thing to say about MTG "getting used to this."

Most of us probably never thought we'd ever long for Kevin McCarthy to return to the Speakership, but here we are.

AOC Has Democrats Applauding With Her Viral Reaction To Zohran Mamdani's Historic Win

New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had people nodding their heads after she opened up about why democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani's win in the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday is so important for the country at large as well as for the future of the Democratic Party.

Mamdani successfully took on the establishment to become the first South Asian, first Muslim, and first millennial mayor-elect, running a campaign that focused predominantly on the city's affordability crisis and that successfully batted away racist and Islamophobic backlash from right-wingers who claimed his policies would "destroy" the city.

Mike Johnson Gets A Swift Reality Check After Trying To Downplay The Election Results

House Speaker Mike Johnson was called out after displaying his clear denial over Tuesday night's election wins for Democrats, claiming that "no one should read too much into" the results despite major upsets.

People Who Quit Their Jobs On Day One Reveal What Made Them Say 'Nope, Not Doing This'

Every now and then, simply because we need money, we might take a job that doesn't fulfill us in any way, but at least keeps our bank accounts happy.

Some jobs, however, are so soul-sucking that even with no other prospects immediately on the horizon, we can't, in good conscience, keep working them.
