'Modern Family' Star Comes Out As Bisexual Using Iconic Clip From The Show

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily on the beloved sitcom, came out publicly as bisexual by sharing a clip of herself lip-syncing to a scene in which her character asserts that she's gay, only to be met with pushback from family—and fans love it.

When your breakout role was on something as iconic and nostalgic as Modern Family, of course you'd have to use a moment from the show when you have big news to share.

A favorite moment in the show took place when Mitch and Cam (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet) were having dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant with their adopted daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), and their sister, Gloria (Sofía Vergara). In the scene, Vergara encourages Lily to try the Pho to connect with her family roots because "she's Vietnamese."

The young girl then loudly protests, claiming:

"No, I'm gay! I'm gay!"

Chaos ensues for the next two minutes while Lily's dads attempt to diffuse the situation but manage to insult multiple groups of individuals instead.

Now 18 years old and a singer and actress, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons has allegedly heard joke after joke throughout her life about her actually being gay, so she took a moment on Instagram to set the record straight.

Anderson-Emmons appears smiling before the camera while the audio from the chaotic restaurant scene plays in the background. Vergara can be heard telling Lily that she is Vietnamese, and Anderson-Emmons then lip-syncs her own part about being gay instead.

The text overlay on the video reads:

"People keep joking so much about me being gay when I literally am (I'm bi)."

The caption on the video also read:

"Happy Pride Month to all and to all a Good Night, hehehe."

Fellow Instagrammers were quick to imagine how proud and supportive Mitch and Cam would be.

Even the Modern Family Instagram account chimed in.

The news also spread on Twitter (X), where people continued the joke from the show, not taking the news seriously.

What Anderson-Emmons did was brave. Still, having the Modern Family community on her side and so many jokes at her disposal must have made it easier and more fun.

And Modern Family fans were totally right: Mitch and Cam would be so proud (but they would have been proud no matter what).
