Prime Minister Theresa May will be stepping down as Leader of the Conservative Party on June 7th.

May made the announcement outside Number 10 on May 24th, delivering an emotionally powered speech.

This comes after several unsuccessful attempts to gain the support of the MPs regarding her Brexit deal.

"I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal," she says to the assembled press.

"Sadly I have not been able to do so. I tried three times."
"But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interest of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort."

May continued:

"It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit. It will be for my successor to seek a way forward that honors the result of the referendum."

As her speech went on, May became more tearful. She ended her speech, stating that she had "no ill will, and only gratitude" regarding her time as Prime Minister.

Obviously, it immediately became a meme.

Twitter is abuzz with the hashtag #Trexit, sharing opinions and making jokes at May's expense.

This Twitter user clearly found the hashtag's play-on-words hilarious.

One even already showed support for a new (and already better) Prime Minster.

May is officially resigning on June 7th, but don't worry, there are sure to be plenty of memes to keep you entertained in the meantime. After all, isn't that what social media is for?

The process to elect a new Prime Minister will begin shortly after May's resignation. We already know who we'd vote for.

Yes, it's the cat.

Nothing seen on Game of Thrones, however, can compare with an actual near-death experience Clarke experienced, which she recently discussed on the podcast How To Fail with Elizabeth Day:
