Purim 2018: 10 Funny Memes You Need to See

Today is the Jewish holiday Purim, also known as "Jewish Halloween." The date commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, who was a grand vizier in the Persian empire under King Ahasuerus, traditionally identified as Xerxes I, planning on killing all the Jews.

The events of Purim are recorded in the Bible in the Book of Esther when Haman's plans are foiled in the city of Susa by Mordecai and his cousin and adopted daughter, Esther. Esther was a Jewish queen and the wife of King Ahasuerus. One day, Mordecai overheard a plot by two eunuchs to kill the king. Mordecai told Esther about the plans of the two conspirators and they were hanged.

King Ahasuerus did not know that Mordecai had saved his life.

Meanwhile, Haman the Agagite commanded Mordecai to pay obeisance to him. Mordecai declined, insulting the grand vizier, who then went to the king and informed him that the Jews were disloyal and that he would pay the king if he could exterminate them. But before this plot could unfold, Esther informed King Ahasuerus that Mordecai had saved his royal life.

Esther later revealed to the king that she, like Mordecai, was also a Jew. At the end of the story, Haman is hanged instead of Mordecai.

Since then, Purim has been celebrated as a Jewish holiday. One noticeable thing about Purim is the costumes; according to Chabad.org, "[t]he custom of wearing costumes on Purim is an allusion to the nature of the Purim miracle, where the details of the story are really miracles hidden within natural events." It also suggested that the costumes refer to Esther's hidden Jewry.

Other ways to celebrate Purim include partying and giving gifts to the poor or charity.

Purim begins at sunset on Wednesday, Feb. 28, and ends at sundown on Thursday, March 1, according to My Jewish Learning. The Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar, and thus new days begin at sundown.

Actor Pedro Pascal recently explained why he said Harry Potter author and anti-trans activist JK Rowling behaves like a "heinous loser," and suffice it to say he has absolutely no regrets.

The comment came in reference to Rowling gloating over the U.K. Supreme Court's recent decision to define what exactly constitutes a "woman" in the eyes of U.K. law, a decision that subjects trans people to violence, among other problems.

Trump Ripped After Posting Disturbing Parody Music Video About His Attack On Iran

President Donald Trump is facing harsh criticism after he shared a music video featuring the 1980 song "Bomb Iran"—a parody of The Regents song "Barbara Ann" that is best known for being covered by the Beach Boys—amid a ceasefire between Israel and Iran that could further inflame tensions in the Middle East.

The controversial parody song by Vince Vance & the Valiants plays over footage of B-2 stealth bombers, the same aircraft used to drop 14 GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Fordow enrichment plant, Natanz complex, and Isfahan site.

President Donald Trump lashed out at Zohran Mamdani after the 33-year-old democratic socialist handily defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday—only to be called out for projecting his own feelings of inadequacy onto the star candidate.

Mamdani ran a campaign centered around economic populism, arguing that the city, a global financial center, has grown unaffordable for everyday residents, citing soaring rents and grocery prices, and outlining policies aimed at reducing the cost of living.
