You kind of know already what kind of people are attracted to what kind of job. Chefs love working with food, teachers love helping kids, and actors love performing all the time. However, certain jobs also attract a very different kind of individual: jerks, people who make working there a literal nightmare, and those professions are highlighted in the entries below.
Reddit user, u/Catnplantladyy, wanted to know:
What careers attract the biggest jerks?
What Else Are We Going To Talk About? The Kids?
the simpsons teacher GIFGiphyi say this as someone in the field but teaching seems to attract gossip hounds and people with a martyr complex
My wife taught for three decades. I have seen a lot of the gossip BS. The fascinating part for me was seeing how many school counselors, were bat sh-t, certifiable, flat out crazy. There were many wild situations with that group, over the years.
"No Dummies Allowed."
Software engineers.
Damn the elitism and gatekeeping is so unreal.
Power Over Others
In my experience, any job that gives people power over others.
Police. Army. Security Guard. Border control. Even caregivers. Now, of course 99% of them are not jerks and went into that kind of job to protect and serve others. But there is a minority of people on a power trip.
Absolutely the common denominator is having power over people. Some people go into it explicitly or find they like it subconsciously, or get jaded and settle in.
To add more examples: teachers (power over students), nurses (over their patients), managers (instead of working with products/customers, they control employees), local politicians, HOA boardmembers, club leaders.
Something We've Learned From Pop Culture
In my experience, weirdly, the fire department.
Younger firefighters in some cases are some of the biggest douchebags that I've met while working. Not as big of an issue at all with older firefighters. They're generally super cool.
Such Little Power Go To Their Heads
season 3 smoking GIFGiphyMinimum wage job managers. Most likely older people that are grumpy all the time and smell like cigarettes
[I] think this is just them being jaded from being stuck in that position for probably their entire life, rather than being a jerk from the start
On-Air Conmen
Televangelists
There really needs to be stricter laws for con artists and grifters. Televangelists, psychics, multilevel marketers, etc are given way too much freedom considering they are obvious criminals.
Scalpel Jockies
In regards to medical specialties, surgeons have a reputation for being arrogant.
Soooooo many surgeons just have zero people skills. But a lot of other surgeons think they're god
Read A Ton, Act Like A Jerk A Ton
Law.
I'm in law school and it seems like the vast majority of people are jerks, to put it politely. I keep hearing that my faculty is one of the better ones in the country and that people are much worse in others.
It literally feels like high school, only with people who think they're the most clever humans on earth.
Make People Hate How Much They Love You
Influencers
Influencer seems more like a phase than a career.
Seems more like a period in their life then they drop off the face of the planet
"...Manipulating People Into Buying Stuff They Don't Want."
the simpsons episode 25 GIFGiphyThis is my experience. It takes a certain kind of person to be good at it and enjoy what is fundamentally manipulating people into buying stuff they don't want .
