Donald Trump has been a rallying point for many members of the Republican party, with most seemingly willing to ignore his mistakes—or outright supporting them.
This isn't the case for everyone, though, as a former GOP lawmaker from Michigan has joined an ever growing group of people from the party who are not afraid to criticize Trump's performance as president.
Former Michigan U.S. Representative David Trott recently denounced Donald Trump in a letter to the editor of The Atlantic, not mincing words when declaring the President "unfit for office."
"Trump is psychologically, morally, intellectually, and emotionally unfit for office."
Trott said he is even considering voting for Trump's Democratic opponent, rather than see Trump in the White House for another 4 years.
"I will now have to consider voting for a Democrat: High unemployment, a stagnating economy, and massive debt for a few years are better than alienating the rest of our allies, getting into a nuclear war with Iran, and allowing 10,000 Islamist soldiers to be set free in Syria."
The letter to the editor is not available on The Atlantic's website but a photo of the letter in the print version of the magazine was uploaded to Twitter by Chad Livengood, senior editor of Crain's Detroit Business.
Trott also calls for Trump's removal from office in his letter, in no uncertain terms.
"President Trump's inability or unwillingness to follow normal decision-making protocols has created chaos in our foreign policy and put our country at risk."
"We can only hope Congress impeaches and removes him so we have a choice between two adults in 2020."
The letter to the editor isn't the only public forum where Trott has voiced his opposition to Trump.
The New York Times documented the time in 2017 when he expressed his concerns over Trump's erratic and inconsistent behaviors in a closed-door meeting.
When Trott found out that word had reached the president of his speaking up about his concerns, despite them being voiced in a private meeting, he quickly decided not to seek re-election instead of facing the inevitable storm of the President's ire and public ill will while on the campaign trail.
He also told The Times that many other Republican lawmakers share similar concerns about the President's erratic behavior but are afraid to publicly voice those concerns.
Proving Trott's point, other Michigan Republicans are quickly disavowing Trott. Meshawn Maddock, chairwoman of the 11th Congressional District Republican Committee, was quoted as calling Trott a "Democrat in disguise."
She further accused him of abandoning his constituents by allowing a Democrat to take his House seat.
"We have always suspected that David Trott is not conservative. He's certainly not conservative enough for us in the 11th District."
People appreciated Trott's honest assessment.
Although it was not lost on folks that only FORMER Republican officeholders who speak out against Trump.
Still, Trott's letter is a welcome development.
