But one of her favorite aspects of Newlyweds was filming in front of a live audience, which gave them immediate feedback on how the show was running and whether or not the jokes were funny.
As an aside, she turned to the press conference audience and declared:
"By the way, I did a single camera, which I hated."
"I mean, it's a great show, 'New Girl,' very funny. For real, it's a good show!"
"But doing it is just like doing a movie."
"You've got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It's silent, and it's awful for me."
"For me, awful."

After receiving critical feedback about the comment, Jamie Lee Curtis posted a single photo from her New Girl days, featuring herself, Zooey Deschanel, and Rob Reiner, a dysfunctional but loving family trio on the show.
Paired with the photograph, Curtis dismissed the criticism:
"As if we don't have bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large, and natural disasters and unnatural behaviors of despots, than to be concerned about a flip comment picked up at a press moment promoting 'Newlyweds' at NBC."
"I was there gushing about a multi-camera sitcom that I co-created along with Gail Lerner, about a late-in-life love and people finding each other and marrying on a whim. It stars Tea Leoni and Tim Daly as the couple."
"We are having so much fun, and the audiences are loving it, and I was comparing how much I liked doing the show live in front of a studio audience, which is almost like doing a play, where you get immediate feedback."
"[I was comparing that] to the experience of doing a single camera comedy like 'New Girl,' where there's absolutely no feedback, as if you're trying to do comedy in a vacuum, like a comedy feature."
"I said it wasn't my favorite experience, although the show itself is fantastic, and the team that made it is talented, and Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human, and I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes, and that was sweet and lovely."

And, deciding the conversation was over, Curtis turned off her comments.
It's understandable how viewers were left with a bad taste in their mouth when the primary descriptors Curtis used during her aside about New Girl were "awful" and "hated."
But it's possible to enjoy and appreciate a project without loving every aspect of it, and for Jamie Lee Curtis, it sounds like she prefers interactive comedy more than waiting to hear isolated feedback about a show or film months later.
Two contestants in this year's pageant on August 8 wore costumes with elements derived from Indigenous cultures.
While hosting the pageant, Callingbull, a Plains Cree woman from the Enoch Cree Nation, took time to speak out about the appropriation during the live broadcast.
The moment came as director of Miss Universe Canada Sonny Borelli began to read the names of the Canadian contestants who'd qualified for the Miss Universe pageant.
Callingbull stopped him and asked that the music be lowered so that she could speak. She then addressed the audience about the appropriation she'd witnessed during previous rounds of the competition.
She began by saying what a huge honor it was for her to be the first First Nations winner from Canada before explaining why she was speaking out.
“I wanted to acknowledge something."
“So with Miss Universe Canada, me being the first Indigenous First Nations Miss Universe Canada, that was such a huge honor. One of the biggest dreams of my life was coming here and fulfilling that.”
“But sometimes there are mistakes that are made. During this week, I wanted to acknowledge this."
Callingbull then described what she'd seen.
"During the national competition, the costume competition, there was cultural appropriation that was done towards Indigenous peoples. And I saw this right away. I wasn’t there. I just saw it on video."
At issue were outfits worn by two contestants, Karisa Haverkamp and Jasleen Kaily in the pageant's costume competition on August 4.
Haverkamp wore a turquoise, black and white headdress with feathers and red hand painted on her cheeck, while Kaily's featured traditionally Indigenous details like fringe on her two-piece costume, braids, and mukluks, one of the several types of Indigenous boots.
Callingbull then praised the pageant and the contestants for the way they handled the ensuing conversation.
“They heard exactly what we need to do to change."
"I think we’re living in a time, it’s 2026, we should know better, but most importantly, a part of reconciliation is that we educate and learn and understand and move on from these things in a good way.”
On social media, many people praised Callingbull for speaking out and for the way she handled the matter.
Of course, given the times, Callingbull certainly has her critics, especially because many have mistakenly claimed that both contestants are Indigenous themselves.
Callingbull has been accused by conservatives of bullying both women, but in Kaily's case the Indigenous claim is not true: She is of Indian descent, not Indigenous of First Nations.
Haverkamp, on the other hand, does have Indigenous heritage via her great grandmother, which she has mentioned in her Miss Universe interviews and referenced in her apology for the incident.
Regardless, being a First Nations woman and having Indigenous heritage are two different things, and Haverkamp herself seems to understand the distinction. She apologized for causing "hurt and offence to people in the Indigenous community."
Canada's history with respect to First Nations peoples is every bit as brutal and horrific as the United States', and for the last several years, the country has been engaged in something of a national reckoning with that history that the U.S. has never quite had the guts for.
The Canadian government's reckoning began in earnest 2008 with the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which uncovered the horrors of Canada's "Indian Residential Schools" during its colonial period.
In these schools, which were run primarily by the Catholic Church, First Nations children were horrifically and sadistically abused as part of an assimilation campaign the government has called a "cultural genocide."
Over the years since, scandals have erupted over the discovery of unmarked graves containing the remains of First Nations students who were killed at these schools.
Nevertheless, the topic of reconciliation remains controversial, as the Miss Universe incident reveals.
But while some may not like it, open conversations about the present-day impacts of that horrific history, like the one Callingbull sparked, are a necessary step in confronting that legacy. And the discomfort it creates is kind of part of the point.
Molina recorded the armed ICE agent at her car window on her phone. Dashcam footage shared later would show the agent exited his vehicle with his gun drawn.
She shared the phone video on Instagram with the caption:
"Imagine going around Falls Church VA dropping off your cards at lawyers offices because you do psychological immigration evaluations as an LPC and you see people being kidnapped."
"Then when you call them a b*tch, cause that’s what they are, they block you in, in an attempt to scare you for 'following' them. Following who? And then getting a g*n pulled out on you to scare you. What a b*tch. #ice f*ck them."

The agent first threatened Molina with arrest, claiming she had followed them, but when Molina said she had dashcam footage proving she hadn't, the agent brandishing the gun holstered it then told other approaching agents that Molina tried to hit them with her car.
This same claim has been made repeatedly by ICE agents, never with any evidence to support it, ever since the ICE agent that shot and killed Renee Good was exonerated by DHS after making that claim.
The ICE agent that killed a man in Maine made the same claim, but videos of the scene showed he lied, leading people to speculate that agents have been told to make this claim every time a vehicle is involved in their use of force.
Molina shared the official DHS statement where they claimed they boxed her in to get "background information."

Like prior DHS statements, it claimed ICE agents were the victims and only drew their weapons out of a legitimate fear for their lives, prompted by a credible threat.
In their official statement, DHS wrote:
"On August 10, 2026, while ICE was conducting targeted immigration enforcement in Falls Church, Virginia, an anti-ICE agitator began to drive her car in circles around our ICE officers and then attempted to harm officers by weaponizing her vehicle against them -all in an attempt to help illegal aliens get away."
Molina then shared her dashcam footage that proved ICE and DHS were lying—again—captioned:
"One thing I’m not is a liar—fu*k them. He clearly was mad. Imagine pointing a g*n at someone for being called a hoe [sic] ain’t the first time I looked down a barrel. Thank yall for checkin in. F*ck ice. And f*ck you if you support this bullsh!t."

Molina also spoke with CNN about the ICE agent putting a gun in her face because she hurt his feelings.
People were outraged by the latest ICE use of force against a United States citizen and the lies DHS told to justify it.

Several citizen and immigrant advocacy groups have suggested drivers, especially BIPOC, invest in dashcam systems to counter harassment, threats, intimidation, and violence from ICE agents and the false claims DHS keeps getting caught making to justify their actions.
