Democratic Senator Ben Ray Luján called out President Donald Trump following Trump's threat to rename the state of New Mexico to "New America."
Luján's remark came after Trump already made headlines for claiming, amid a trade war with Canada, that the United States was considering "changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to [be] doing much business with Ontario any longer."
Trump later signed an executive order directing U.S. government agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The change applies only to official U.S. government usage and does not alter the lake’s name in Canada or in international usage.
The White House later retweeted a screenshot of a post Trump published on Truth Social That shows the state of New Mexico renamed to "New America."
You can see the post below.

Luján responded to it by referring to Trump as a "sinvergüenza," a Spanish word that means "shameless" or "scoundrel":
"It’s New Mexico, always has been and always will be. Just like how you’ll always be a sinvergüenza and corrupt."

Many appreciated his response and echoed his criticisms of the president.
Trump's post was also criticized by Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico's governor. Grisham said "New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed." She said his post came "While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, the price of gas—and everything else—keeps rising."
She stressed that Democratic leadership in New Mexico has been hard at work "providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to health care and investing in housing" and that "While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work."
