Gaga just keeps coming out here winning!
She's having quite a year--at a time when many people were predicting her demise just a short year ago. And now, here's Lady Gaga doing what her most obvious analogue never could: taking over Hollywood with her performance in A Star Is Born and seemingly on her way to some hardware nominations--if not wins!--in the New Year.
So if there's ever time to go for some statement sartorial choices, it's right now. And go bold she did, this past Monday--not with the bizarre meat or egg themed costumes she's pulled from in the past, but rather a high-fashion, structured-meets-billowy oversized men's suit by Marc Jacobs to Elle magazine's Elle Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration.
But while the internet couldn't help but have a little bit of fun with the suit (more on that in a moment), Gaga had deep, personal reasons for choosing the ensemble, which she shared with the audience in her typical, heart-on-the-suitcoat-sleeve we've come to know and love her for.
"I tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics and the most beautiful silks in the world," Gaga told the audience while accepting a Women in Hollywood award. "To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach."
She went on to explain how she struggles with the expectations placed on women in Hollywood, and how they intersect with her own challenges with mental health, eating disorders and sexual assault.
"I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood?" she told the crowd, going to say that women's place in Hollywood and the world at large is more than just contestants in a "beauty pageant" but rather people with "deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced."
Woo! Get it, Gaga!
After trying on dress after dress, Gaga settled on the statement pantsuit, but not without pushback from her staff, who were confused by the choice.
But Gaga insisted, saying she "felt like me today" in the suit, and adding that putting the suit on helped clarify what was really on her heart to say at the Elle event:
"As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back. Today I wear the pants."
Gaga. Came. To Preach.
Now, the internet couldn't help but have a little bit of fun with the fact that--beautiful draping and perfect fit aside--the suit does have some low-key NBA Draft vibes:
But just as many people were, well, gaga (sorry) both for the suit itself and our Lady's reasons for wearing it:
Gaga closed her remarks by saying that she felt called to resist the pressures of Hollywood and "use what really matters: my voice." Safe to say we're hearing her loud and clear!
