Four prominent Republicans—including frequent Trump critic George Conway—published an op-ed in the New York Times entitled We Are Republicans, and We Want Trump Defeated.

In the op-ed, the authors announce the formation of Project Lincoln, a political action committee dedicated to swaying moderate Republicans against Trump in the 2020 election.

It likely won't come as a surprise that the Trump campaign is not on board.

Communications director for the Trump campaign, Tim Murtaugh, told Newsweek that the authors were a part of the "swamp" Trump vowed to drain, and that they're "upset they've lost all of their power and influence inside the Republican Party."

It wasn't long before George Conway responded.

Conway wrote:

"We were conservatives back when Donald Trump and his family were making campaign contributions to Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, John Kerry and a slew of other liberals, and back when being a Republican meant standing up for fiscal responsibility, for free markets, against foreign tyrants, and for the rule of law. Today it seems that the Republican Party apparatus defines Republicanism and Conservatism as meaning one thing—unwavering fidelity to the incompetent narcissistic sociopath in the White House, and to his senseless, self-serving whims. We aim to restore conservatism to a set of enduring principles, and to save it from the cult of personality some have caused it to become."

People commended Conway for his unequivocal rebuke.

George Conway's wife, Kellyanne Conway, is one of the President's top advisers.
