During his September 1 speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, President Joe Biden warned that Donald Trump and his "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement:
“represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic."
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll that was taken since the speech, found that a majority of Americans agree with the President.
According to the poll, 58% of respondents said they believed the MAGA movement was undermining the foundation of American democracy.
And that includes 1 in 4 Republicans.

Although some thought the 58% number was frighteningly low.
“@kylegriffin1 58% ?? 42% aren’t paying attention.”— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
“@kylegriffin1 That number is depressingly low, tbh.”— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
While most Republicans still support Trump, many of his allies appear to have distanced themselves from the former President after the January 6 Capitol siege and his constant peddling of falsities–including that he actually won the 2020 election.
The poll showed that 60% of Republicans did not think Trump's MAGA movement best represented the majority of their party.
“@kylegriffin1 It's improvement over where we were. Lots of reports of Trump flags coming down & other indications voters are backing away from MAGA.

The more evidence that comes out in the NARA-Lago case and the more hi-vis Republicans decouple from him, the more MAGA will shrivel.”— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
“@kylegriffin1 @reedgalen Yep, that tracks.

At least from my spot on the ground on a farm in super red rural NW Ohio.

In OH, at least, still lots of RINOs who’re tired of Trump.

The word I hear the most is “embarrassed” in front of the world.

1/”— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
During his speech, Biden touched on Trump's MAGA movement that eventually led to the US Capitol insurrection and warned that 45 was still poisoning the 2022 Midterm Elections and the 2024 White House race.
“They look at the mob that stormed the United States Capitol on January 6 brutally attacking law enforcement, not as insurrectionists who placed a dagger at the throat of our democracy, but they look at it (them) as patriots.”
“They see their MAGA failure to stop a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election as preparation for the 2022 and 2024 elections."
"This time they are determined to succeed in thwarting the will of the people.”
“@kylegriffin1 “Make America Great Again” is a phrase Trump used to con people into following him/joining his cult/& stealing their money. Trump’s needs ALWAYS come first! He could care less about Americans! Trump has conned His base! Trump always puts HIS own interests first! He is a FRAUD!””— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
“@kylegriffin1 That number will keep growing as more evidence of trumps criminality emerges”— Kyle Griffin (@Kyle Griffin) 1662735602
Reuters did indicate, however, that in spite of the unfavorable view of Trump and his allies, Biden's approval ratings remained low.
Just 39% of pollers said they approved of Biden's job performance as president.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll consisted of 1,003 adult participants, including 411 Democrats and 397 Republicans.
Reuters said the poll has a credibility interval–a measure of precision–of four percentage points.
