French people are protesting a plan to clean the Seine River ahead of the Paris Olympics with the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which translates to 'I sh*t in the Seine on June 23'—and now we know why.

The French are renowned for many things—food, fashion, art—but perhaps the most inherently French thing of all is protest.

And boy are the French planning to roll out the red protest carpet for the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics.

Recently, a very curious call for protest has arisen online, led by the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which means "I sh*t in the Seine on June 23," the Seine of course being the iconic river that runs through Paris. Uhhhh, quoi?

As part of the Olympic games, France has spent more than a billion dollars to clean the notoriously polluted Seine so that some of the games' aquatic events can be held in its waters.

Of course most French people and those in the know wouldn't jump in the Seine for all the croissants in Paris, no matter how diligently you said you'd cleaned it.

So French President Emanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced they will jump in and swim into the river together and take a dip on June 23 to show just how sparkling clean the Seine's waters now are. Cute, right?

But why would the French want to take a big steaming dump in the river on the very day Macron and Hidalgo are taking a dip—and after all that money was spent to clean it up?

Well, many of the French are furious about how much money Macron has spent on the Olympics, given the punishing economy of recent years and soaring cost of living.

Even more infuriating to many French people has been Macron's repeated and consistent legislative attacks on retirement and other social benefits.

You really can't blame them for being enraged at the billions upon billions of dollars Macron has spent on the Olympics while regular French people who will never be able to afford a ticket to the Olympics keep having their benefits cut amid a hugely inflated economy.

Hence, #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin was born. Whether or not the French will actually show up en masse remains to be seen; the Parisians involved would be pooping in their own water supply for starters, so it's probably an elaborate joke.

The other protests planned during the actual Games themselves, however?

Protest proposals are myriad, with plans to disrupt everything from transit to the venues hosting the events, as the French vow to send a message to Macron by making these Olympics an absolute mess for everyone attending. (If that's you, don't say you weren't warned!)

Naturally, pooping in the Seine as an act of protest has the internet laughing while also applauding the French in solidarity with hilarious toilet-themed memes.

The French win the gold medal for showing their government who's actually boss. A tip of the beret to them all!

Italian Prime Minister's Sarcastic Remarks About Distancing Italy from The U.S. Resurface After Trump's NATO Gripe

Sarcastic remarks Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made earlier this month in response to calls for Italy to distance itself from the U.S. resurfaced after President Donald Trump claimed during a speech at the World Economic Forum that the U.S. has "never gotten anything" from NATO.

Trump stoked tensions at the gathering of world and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, by continuing his push to seize control of Greenland from Denmark. He reiterated his reasoning that owning Greenland is crucial to domestic and international security, dismissing the fact the territory is under the control of a key ally.

Ted Cruz's Team Responds To Backlash After He's Spotted On Flight Out Of Texas As State Braces For Winter Storm

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz's team was forced to respond to criticisms after he was photographed on a flight to California on Tuesday as Texas prepares for an arctic cold front and potentially severe winter storm conditions—events that are reminding people of Cruz's now-infamous trip to Cancún.

Political strategist Shea Jordan Smith shared an image of Cruz taken on January 20 that shows him "on a plane heading to Laguna Beach as the state of Texas braces for a rare ice threat and arctic cold front."
