"Donate just $1 a day and you could feed this child" should sound familiar to anybody who stayed up too late watching cable tv and saw ads trying to put an end to food insecurity around the world.

But in the fallout of the pandemic, it turns out that the United States has actually become a nation with a high rate of food insecurity. More than 60 million Americans were forced to turn to food banks to feed their families as the economy tanked throughout 2020.

And TV ads are starting to reflect that.

A German ad urging German citizens to donate and help "feed America" is going viral because of Americans' incredulity at the advertisement.

The commercial advertises that food accessible to a small American child could ultimately lead to more health problems, and urges viewers to donate money to help "feed America."

While the commercial was originally made as satire by Great Nations Eat, the ad did not use any false statistics—including that over 20% of Americans worry about food insecurity, whereas only 6% of Germans do.

Share Our Strength, the company responsible for the advertisement, said that the idea was to shake things up to get some attention across the globe.

Billy Shore, the CEO and Founder of Share Our Strength, said:

"This was really to try to think a little more disruptively to get people's attention, to go right to the heart of the issue that people are not aware hunger is a problem in the United States."

While a bit unconventional, the ad does deliver the message that America is probably not doing as okay as we once thought.
