Former American Idol contestant David Archuleta announced on Instagram he is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. He went on to explain why that is okay alongside his religious faith.

Archuleta, now 30 years old, first grabbed people's attention in 2008 when he came in second place during the seventh season of American Idol.

Even then, Archuleta stayed true to himself. In his famous rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine," Archuleta omitted the line "And no religion too."

Now, after coming out as gay to his family back in 2014, Archuleta chose to come out publicly to make a case for being gay and staying committed to religion.

In the lengthy caption to his post, Archuleta shared how difficult it was to come out publicly.

"I like to keep to myself but also thought this was important to share because I know so many other people from religious upbringings feel the same way."

After explaining the way his understanding of his orientation has changed over the years, Archuleta offered words of support.

"There are people experiencing the same feelings of being LGBTQIA+, (i know that's a lot of letters that a lot of people don't understand, but there are a lot of unique experiences people feel and live that make them feel isolated and alone that are represented) who are wrestling to follow their beliefs that are so important to them, just as I have."
"Idk what to make of it and I don't have all the answers. I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of that community and trying to find that balance with their faith which also is a huge part of their identity like myself."

People who saw the singer's post were grateful for his supportive message.

With plenty of people undoubtedly fitting the description Archuleta painted, here's hoping his post empowers more than a few people to live exactly who they need to feel most comfortable.
