It's been more than a year since former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election to current President Joe Biden, yet Trump continues to peddle nonsense claims that the election was "stolen" from him by Democrats engaging in widespread fraud.
Trump's legal team and other conservative lawyers lost more than 50 court cases in their attempts to overturn the election results, but that hasn't stopped Georgia gubernatorial candidate David Perdue—whom Trump recently endorsed—from trying his luck at litigating the election.
A former Senator, Perdue lost a crucial 2021 runoff to represent Georgia in the United States Senate, conceding to current Democratic Senator John Ossoff, congratulating him and the Democratic Party for the victory, which delivered Democrats a functional majority in the Senate.
Now, Perdue is singing another tune.
On Friday, news broke that Perdue joined a lawsuit claiming that fraudulent ballots were counted in Fulton County, the most populous county in Georgia. The suit is asking the court to grant plaintiffs access to examine ballot materials in order to "prove" the nonexistent fraud took place.
Perdue wrote in a statement:
“I want to use my position and legal standing to shine light on what I know were serious violations of Georgia law in the Fulton absentee ballot tabulation. We are asking a judge to consider the evidence after our forensic examination of the absentee ballots is completed and hold those persons responsible who engaged in this wrongful conduct.”
Multiple Georgia election officials, including Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans—have repeatedly debunked the lies that Georgia's election was illegitimate. Nevertheless, Perdue maintains that he wouldn't have certified Georgia's election results had he been in the Senate during the national certification of Biden's victory.
Perdue is considered by many Georgia conservatives to be a "RINO," or Republican in Name Only, so it's possible this lawsuit is motivated by Perdue's efforts to ingratiate himself with Trump supporters in the Peach State.
People were quick to call him out on it.
Using the legal system as a fundraising tactic is unconscionable. He knows damn well that there are no problems with the ballots https://t.co/qf5cZ9jnq4

Perdue, like many of his cynical brethren, does not believe this stuff at all. But it’s a big sexy campaign issue as everyone races to pledge fealty to the last guy and dives headfirst off the ledge of democratic governance. https://t.co/wKbVX1ekdR

As @stphnfwlr says directly, Perdue is lying. His lawyers should be sanctioned for filing this. And Kemp should use direct language to echo that truth. But will he? #gapol https://t.co/UwJgvt9lwf

There appears to be no limit to the debasement of self and our democracy some are willing to engage in simply to worship at the altar of a losing candidate. Meanwhile, these lies are putting election workers and their families at risk. https://t.co/BjgQqi91CO

Others pointed to the development as further evidence that the GOP is fully committing to fantasies of fraud.
Wow, Perdue has just gone straight down the conspiracy rabbit hole. The rapid descent is almost frightening https://t.co/7KUBG1mZch

The Republican Party is so far gone. They have all lost any sense of reality, fact vs fiction. As @WalshFreedom says, they now all bow down to a very dangerous sociopathatic narcissist https://t.co/adjVOaYlxz

Never-ending false charges of election fraud seem to be the main GOP issue for 2022. https://t.co/8MB6MeV0MJ

The Georgia gubernatorial election will be conducted in November of next year.
