In the wake of the series’ biggest and most shocking death, the show must go on; and in season eight’s 10th episode, “The Lost and the Plunderers,” it most definitely will go on. We last left Rick and Michonne mourning over the loss of Carl with a weird glimpse to the future of a bleeding Deputy Grimes propped against a tree.
While fans would likely want the follow-up episode to serve as a sort of "in memoriam" for the now dead Grimes, there’s still much to resolve that likely won’t allow for too much grieving. In fact, if spoilers from the highly trusted fansite, The Spoiling Dead Fans, are accurate, showrunners aren’t giving viewers much time to grieve. According to a Q&A posted by owner and forum admin ShinyFirefly, the 10th episode spends plenty of time exploring the going-ons at other communities.
The last we left Enid and Aaron, they were in a sticky situation at the Oceanside community. Based on ShinyFirefly’s assessment, the episode will partially resolve that and Enid will be sent back to Hilltop while Aaron stays behind. In the quest for more hands against the Saviors, Oceanside is a vital ally that refuses to join in. As fans in the forum have speculated, though the all-female community says “no” at first, chances are they’ll return for a triumphant victory over the Saviors in a later episode.
We also apparently return to the junkyard for a confrontation between the Scavengers and the Saviors. In last week’s preview for “The Lost and the Plunderers,” a very angry Negan was seen shouting “You will do your job!” at someone. ShinyFirefly confirms that it was directed at his right-hand man, Simon, who wishes to kill all the Junkyard residents for betraying them. Negan, on the other hand, still sees value in them and wants only to punish them. In “The Lost and the Plunderers,” the relationship between Negan and Simon takes another hit when Simon decimates the Junkyard community, leaving only its leader, Jadis, behind.
The episode's most significant moment occurs during a conversation between Negan and Rick over a walkie-talkie. There is plenty of Angry Rick Grimes and Smug Negan to go around, though the latter does offer a moment of pity for Rick after learning of Carl’s death.
The first episode of season eight’s return was very confined to Alexandria and Ezekiel, Carol, and Morgan’s interconnected story, but “The Lost and the Plunderers” returns viewers to a somewhat broader scope. Episode 10 airs at 9 pm EST.
