Movie fans across the world have been marking Star Wars Day in style, donning costumes and posting to social media to show their appreciation for the sci-fi franchise.

Star Wars Day is celebrated on May 4 each year, with pun-making fans declaring

“May the fourth be with you"

in homage to the film series' classic Jedi phrase.

The official Twitter account for the franchise asked fans to share their celebrations.

With Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew passing away earlier this week, his family used the opportunity to share a special message.

A post on the actor's Twitter account read:

“May the 4th is a tribute to the scale of Star Wars reach and as we process losing Peter we have been reading all of your posts, hearing your stories & seeing decades worth of fan photos and from the bottom of our hearts we wanted to say Thank You."

While many fans were tweeting, on England's south coast, cosplay actors at Portsmouth Comic Con took to the streets in their finest outfits, with Mayhew's own character Chewbacca, Darth Vader and many a stormtrooper on show.

Meanwhile in Ireland, members of the 501st Legion Ireland Garrison dressed as further characters including Rey and a snow trooper on a boat trip to Skellig Michael.

The most recent Star Wars trilogy was partially filmed on the small island.

In nearby Portmagee, as part of the town's May the 4th Festival, young children practiced their skills with a lightsaber by dueling on the grass.

On Twitter, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill had his own twist on the celebration's shrewd slogan.

Hamill also corrected a little BBC typo...

...shared a video from an organization he supports that creates prosthetics...

...reminisced about his son's time on the set of The Empire Strikes Back...

...and answered a couple important fan questions, like what was up with the blue milk and...

...when did Luke figure out Leia was his sister.

Meanwhile Warwick Davis, who first appeared as an Ewok in the original Star Wars trilogy film Return of the Jedi and recently appeared again as the character Woollivan in The Force Awakens, shared a message with fans.

Davis played roles in several Star Wars films.

The United Nations Women Twitter account took the chance to pay their respect to Carrie Fisher, who died in 2016, for her “fierce portrayal of Princess Leia".

It tweeted:

“Carrie Fisher's fierce portrayal of Princess Leia, a leader in a male-dominated universe, continues to inspire girls all around the (world) to never give up on their dreams."

Several took the opportunity to remember Fisher...

...and Mayhew...

...and Kenny Baker.

The National Library of Scotland decided there was space for a joke during the celebrations, offering a rather unique weather update.

And in Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison's Liberal Party took things up a notch with a carefully edited photo of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

With Mr Morrison's face edited onto the image of the Jedi character, a caption next to the politician reads “the economy is strong with this one".

Here are some other highlights of the day.

But after May the 4th...

...comes Revenge of the Fifth!

See you all next year!

Chefs Break Down The Best Cooking 'Hacks' Everyone Should Know

While some people find cooking soothing and therapeutic, others might break into hives at the very thought of it.

Mainly owing to the fact that they don't always find the journey quite worth the payoff of a perfectly cooked roast chicken, or a spongy and creamy cake.

Gavin Newsom Hilariously Trolls Trump For Struggling To Stay Awake During Antifa Roundtable

California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked President Donald Trump for appearing to fall asleep during a White House roundtable about Antifa, which the administration recently designated a "domestic terror organization" even though it's not an organization at all.

Antifa is a loose network of anti-fascist activists with no central structure, no funding, no membership roster, and no offices or leadership hierarchy for prosecutors to target.

Remote Worker Speaks Out After Job Uses 'Dystopian' Software To Track His Productivity

There are a few vital truths to every office-based job. First, there are going to be "busy work" moments, from meetings to admin tasks to minor side-quest-style projects that add to the company in some small way but otherwise feel like a waste of time.

Second, as human beings, we all need breaks to restore our mental focus, so a person who occasionally scrolls through their personal email, sends a few texts to a friend, or even scrolls Instagram for a few minutes, will likely be more productive than those who attempt to lock in and do nothing but their job throughout their entire shift.
