Politifact Just Weighed in on Ted Cruz's Claim That He Has 'Consistently Opposed Shutdowns'

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was caught making dubious claims about his role in the 2013 government shutdown in an interview with MSNBC's Kasie Hunt.

Cruz claimed that "we should not be shutting the government down. I have consistently opposed shutdowns. In 2013, I said we shouldn't shut the government down. Indeed, I went to the Senate floor repeatedly asking unanimous consent to reopen the government."

"Sir, you stood in the way of that," Hunt replied... and right she was!

Cruz infamously filibustered a government funding bill tied to the Affordable Care Act by reading Green Eggs & Ham on the floor of the United States Senate.

This led to a sixteen-day government shutdown which cost taxpayers $24 billion.

Cruz's assertion that he has "consistently opposed shutdowns" scored a "Pants on Fire" rating by Politifact; this marks the ninth time Cruz's words earned Politifact's hottest dishonor. "Cruz did that very thing in 2013, when he was one of 16 senators to vote against cloture for the spending bill that would go on to end the shutdown. He was also one of 18 senators to vote against the bill itself," according to Politifact.

Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) was flabbergasted over Cruz's claim. "You've rendered me speechless," she responded. "2013. 2013."

The Internet had its share of reactions, too.

Congressman David Jolly (R-FL) was equally baffled, tweeting ". just now: "I have always opposed shutting down the government." Um..."

MSNBC's Joy Reid though Cruz's comments were worth a laugh: "Ted Cruz now trying to pretend he didn't shut down the government in 2013. Hilarious."

"But I watched him do it!" one Twitter user replied.

Twitter users really let Cruz have it: "I did not read that book as filler; I am not the Zodiac Killer; I will try to re-write history; How I was elected is a mystery"

The reads were real.

Oh, Senator Cruz, whatever shall we do with you?

Trump Dragged After Making Outrageous Comparison To Zohran Mamdani In Viral Clip

President Donald Trump was widely mocked after he asserted during a 60 Minutes interview with Norah O'Donnell that he's "much better-looking" than New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani—a claim that not a soul is taking seriously.

Trump isn't exactly known to be a looker but he has nonetheless declared himself a "perfect physical specimen" and boasted about his physical prowess, once noting that his own White House physician had declared him "healthier than Obama"—despite Trump's distaste for exercise and fondness for fast food.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and the GOP at large after she claimed to have been "horrified" by the toilet in the Lincoln bathroom before President Donald Trump's marble renovation.

Trump shared an update about ongoing renovations aboard Air Force One while en route to Florida for the weekend, even as the federal government remains shut down and his administration continues to refuse to release all of the emergency funds to sustain SNAP food assistance benefits through November.
