Disastrous Baltimore Book Festival Sparks Brutal 'Willy Wonka Experience' And 'Fyre Fest' Comparisons
May 08, 2025
The "Willy Wonka Experience" disaster has struck again—but now among the BookTok community.
BookToker and indie author Grace Willows, who has since set her TikTok profile to private, told the BookTok community that she was organizing a literary ball for indie authors, literary vendors, and readers to meet.
The theme played on the concept of a reader living a million lives through books and was called "A Million Lives Book Festival," but after the so-called event, indie authors have taken to calling it "A Million Lies," and for good reason.
The event took place in Baltimore, Maryland, as part of a weekend for fantasy and romance authors to sign and sell their books. The festival was in the works for over a year and a half, and the star of the weekend was supposed to be a black-tie ball, with formal attire required.
Despite that alleged year and a half of planning, people soon suspected it was thrown together in 45 minutes.
The large convention hall was empty except for a series of long, uncovered tables. The concrete floor was bare. No decorations were hung, save for a single row of fake rose petals that were placed in a row along the length of one table.
Here's one example from indie author Amber Bunch entering the event:
@amber.bunch_author Really though, I still don't know what to think about it all. 🙃 So, I'm just going to continue to laugh it off and be thankful for all the wonderful people I met there. Convention video by me Ball video/photos by: @Author C.A. Burkhart #amillionlivesbookfestival #booktok
The security guard for the room also felt so bad for the attendees that he ran home and brought his own Bluetooth speaker, meant to be used in the shower, because there was no DJ.
Here's a video of BookToker Brandi catching the speaker on camera, which the BookTok community has since named "Steve" because of the background music "You, Me, and Steve" by Garfunkel and Oates.
@mommabtx I dont even have words #steve #theresnothingholdingmeback #what
Because of the event's quality and turnout, indie authors began to issue apology videos to their readers.
Though the situation was not their fault, indie authors still felt terrible for readers who potentially shelled out money for the $23 entry fee, travel, and hotel to attend the event.
Indie author Kalista Neith found this to be especially unacceptable in today's economy.
@kalista_neith_author I'm speechless @S.E. Zell Author, Narrator #abillionlies
But it soon started to dawn on all of the indie authors that there was no way they were going to make their money back.
While readers had to pay to participate, indie authors and vendors also spent thousands of dollars on set up, supplies, travel and lodging.
Because fewer than fifty people were in attendance, and most of them were authors, no one was able to "table," meaning to break even on just the cost of their author signing space.
TikToker @chloyorkcity collected many authors' information so people could show support.

Due to the backlash, Grace Willows issued what many considered a non-apology.
Willows promised that anyone who requested a refund would receive one, and she was empathetic to anyone who was disappointed.
She then went on to excuse the event, stating that all of the signage, decorations, and swag bags had disappeared and likely been stolen. There was even a separate room next to the ballroom that she had called the "Content Creation Room" that was completely empty, but which she claimed was supposed to be decked out with props for the guests to use.
But indie author Lara Buckheit did a little digging and did not believe Willows' explanation.
Buckheit contacted the convention center directly to ask about Willows' claims the items were stolen, and according to the coordinator, that was almost impossible. It's common practice for the event organizer, who was Willows in this scenario, to contact the convention center to file a report, and the fact that no report had been filed was sketchy, at best.
@laraonfirewrites i attended #AMillionLives as an author & i have receipts!!!!! “content creation room” photo by @Coco 🖤 #amillionlivesbookfestival #BookTok #baltimorebookfestival #booktokfyrefest #archerfantasyevents
The utter lack of decorations, signage, music, food, water, as well as the bare concrete floor, which caused issues for attendees with disabilities, showed an obvious lack of preparation or care.
Even an attendance roster showing authors and where their tables were, or a schedule of panels and events, were nowhere to be found.
Willows planned on hosting two more of these events, one in October and one in 2026, but has suspended them for the time being while refunds are being sorted out. Hopefully she will keep to her word about refunds, and if she really does decide to host further events, then she had better be taking notes from this one.

Fans Spotted A Flaw On Anna Wintour's Met Gala Gown—And Someone's Getting Fired
May 08, 2025
Even Ana Wintour isn’t above a wardrobe mishap.
During Monday’s 2025 Met Gala, the famously polished Vogue editor-in-chief was spotted with a small but noticeable red stain on her otherwise pristine Louis Vuitton gown.
Social media users on X (formerly Twitter) were quick to point it out—and even quicker to have fun with it.
Wintour arrived in a silver embroidered dress, layered under a soft powder blue coat and styled with her signature bob. But eagle-eyed viewers noticed a faint red smudge just below her left hand, standing out against the light fabric.
Wintour is known for immaculate presentation, and the minor flaw set the internet abuzz.
Fans and followers of fashion were particularly amused, given Wintour’s reputation for perfectionism—and her rumored inspiration for Meryl Streep’s no-nonsense Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.
After all, she’s been the driving force behind the Met Gala since she first co-hosted it in 1995, overseeing everything from the guest list to the red carpet design.
The mental images of what must be going on in Wintour’s staff room were hilarious.
People were worried about the poor soul in charge of getting Wintour dressed.
Folks were not impressed with the dress at all.
Others focused on other elements.
Debate broke out about whether or not it was even a stain.
Could it have been...intentional?!
The event’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” this year.

Piers Morgan Rips Ye For Storming Out Of Interview Over Misstated Number Of X Followers
May 08, 2025
On Monday, British media personality Piers Morgan posted a 17-minute video of a remote interview he did with rapper, producer, and fashion designer Ye and Sneako on his Piers Morgan Uncensored YouTube channel.
It was clear from the title—"'COWARD!' Kanye West/Ye WALKS OUT On Piers Morgan Interview'—that things didn't go well.
You can see the video here:
- YouTube youtu.be
In addition to the title chosen for the video, Morgan also took to X to call out Ye's behavior during the brief interview. He included a screen shot of Ye.
Morgan wrote:
"So, I interviewed Kanye West again today. As I expected, given what I’ve said about him recently, it didn’t last long or go well. This was him right before he stomped off like a big baby. Drops on [Piers Morgan Uncensored] later…"
The video showed less of an interview and more of Ye ranting while Morgan tried to figure out what he was on about.
At one point, Morgan actually asked:
"What are you talking about? I haven’t said anything?"
The tipping point for Ye seemed to be when Morgan referred to Ye's X follower count as 32 million instead of 33.
Before Morgan could finish the question, Ye interjected:
"See wait, wait. Now, look now. Look, look at, look right now, you're not going to take–you're not going to take inches off my dick, bro."
"Like how many followers do I have?"
When Morgan asked:
"Well, how many is it?"
Ye responded:
"I think you could do the study. You got a whole staff over there."
Morgan replied:
"I thought it was 32 million. How many is it? You obviously know."
Ye said:
"I mean, no. I mean don't–don't help them out. You know, they, uh..."
Morgan then corrected himself, saying:
"I'm told it's 33 million now. So congratulations. Your slightly bigger following than I thought."
Ye responded:
"No, congratulations, your information is correct. You're not just some dude, you know, trying to sub. You know, I'm–I'm a gift bro. You know what I mean?"
"Why–why do all you people in media act like you haven't played my songs at your weddings or graduations or at funerals or when your child was born?"
"You know, you take somebody that's living like a [John] Lennon, a Michael Jackson and you just take all this time to just like that nuance right there. It's idiotic."
"It just shows the hate that you put out for people that put love. There's so much love in the art that I put out."
At this point, Morgan interrupted to say:
"With all due respect, what are you talking about? I haven’t said anything?"
Ye replied:
"What are you talking about? It's 30—OK, now you're not taking accountability or responsibility. And you know what, we'll rewind. I need a–I need a–no sir, this is what you get for now we can, we can circle back when you can count."
He then took out his earpiece and stormed off, leaving Sneako sitting there.
Ye's companion made light of his behavior, calling it funny, but Morgan—whose production team spent several days indulging Ye's whims and failure to show up at a previously scheduled time—was unamused.
He told Sneako:
"Tell him from me he’s a sniveling, little coward, and he’s an antisemite and a Hitler worshipper. That’s what I would have asked him if he’d had the balls to sit there and take the questions."
Both Morgan and Ye are polarizing figures, but people seemed to side with Morgan on this one.

As Morgan stated in the intro, his last interview with Ye lasted two hours while this interaction was probably three minutes, tops.
It's unclear how long this one was supposed to last or if Morgan ever plans to go back down this road again.

MAGA Rep. Gets Epic Geography Lesson After Making Inane Claim About 'Gulf Of America'
May 08, 2025
On Monday during a meeting of the House Rules Committee, Wyoming MAGA Republican Representative Harriet Hageman tried to make points with MAGA Republican President Donald Trump by endorsing his executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
She claimed Trump's move was justified because Mexico "has been fouling our waters for decades upon decades." Hageman added the United States needed to "claim ownership of this area."
You can see the moment here:
But Hageman supported her claim by referring to San Diego, California, which is about 1,500 miles away.
Hageman told the House Rules Committee:
"I think another reason why we should change this to the Gulf of America versus the Gulf of Mexico is, for over 40 years, the country of Mexico has been dumping raw sewage into the area near San Diego, California."
"That’s another reason we need to retake and claim ownership of this area."
The environmental issue Hageman referred to involves the Tijuana River that flows from Mexico through California, then empties into the Pacific Ocean.
Hageman threw support behind a bill proposed by Georgia MAGA Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene that would require federal laws, maps and other materials to rename the body of water to match Trump’s executive order.
The exact cost of renaming the Gulf of Mexico hasn't been included in the bill, but it would involve updates across different levels of government and private entities. Initial estimates for signage alone are around $40,000.
The Gulf of Mexico sits on the southeast corner of the United States, the northeast corner of Mexico, and northwest of the Caribbean nation of Cuba.
None of the three countries hold exclusive claim of the water beyond 12 nautical miles of their coastline, where international waters begin.
The body of water has been the Gulf of Mexico on maps and in records dating back to the 1550s.
Mexico became a country in 1821, the U.S. declared itself independent in 1776, and Cuba became a country in 1902, making the Gulf of Mexico over 200 years older than any of them.
Google
Five states now border the Gulf of Mexico: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. They're collectively called the "Gulf States."
Mexico has about 1,700 miles (2,700 km) of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico and where it flows into the Caribbean Sea. The United States coastline on the Gulf of Mexico also spans approximately 1,700 miles (2,700 km).
San Diego, California is on the Pacific coast of the United States, far removed from the Gulf of Mexico. But south of the city is the Gulf of California, which is bordered only by the country of Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Pardo Sheinbaum has not changed the name of that body of water, despite it not sharing coastline with any other country.
She's apparently uninterested in wasting time and money on petty actions that accomplish nothing.
Google
And if Hageman just wants a retaliatory name change, New Mexico is right there on the other side of Arizona.
While Hageman likely felt she made a great point, social media mocked her.

Hageman was elected to Congress in 2022 as the MAGA candidate.
She replaced incumbent Republican Representative Liz Cheney, after winning the GOP primary campaigning as the pro-Trump candidate.
Cheney famously fell out of favor with the GOP for criticizing Trump.

Vance Ripped After Making Cringey Joke About Deporting 2026 World Cup Attendees
May 08, 2025
Vice President JD Vance was soundly criticized after he made a deportation joke while remarking how the 2026 World Cup will see visitors "from close to 100 countries" enter the U.S.
The moment occurred during an announcement naming Andrew Giuliani—son of former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani—as the head of a new task force for the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.
Vance joked that those who violate the terms of their visas will "have to talk to" Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem:
“We’ll have visitors from close to 100 countries. We want them to come, we want them to celebrate, we want them to watch the game. But when the time is up, they’ll have to go home, otherwise they’ll have to talk to Secretary Noem.”
You can hear what Vance said in the video below.
Vance's remarks sparked anger online.
Vance's comments went viral as the U.S. faces criticism for planning to deport migrants without legal status to Libya, which is now effectively divided into two parts, each governed by different factions.
Libyan officials from both rival governments have denied engaging in negotiations with the U.S. about accepting deportees, according to Reuters. The denials come amid reports that the Trump administration is exploring deportation agreements with several African nations—including Libya, Benin, Angola, Eswatini, and Rwanda—despite their troubling human rights records.
A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the interest in Libya just days after Rwanda acknowledged ongoing discussions. In response, immigration lawyers filed an emergency motion Wednesday with a federal judge in Boston to halt any imminent removals, citing "alarming reports" that deportations could occur within hours.
The motion argues that clients from countries like Laos, Vietnam, and the Philippines could be sent to nations with no formal agreements and few legal protections, raising serious concerns about their safety.
