May 24 marked a significant event for the Foo Fighters.
They took the stage at the Bank Of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook in Gilford, New Hampshire, marking their first performance since announcing Josh Freese as their new drummer.
Unsurprisingly, it was an emotionally charged show for Dave Grohl, particularly when he decided to dedicate a song to the band's late drummer Taylor Hawkins.
In between songs, Grohl addressed the audience, saying:
“Would you please welcome the man behind the drums Josh Freese, who has helped save the band."
"We would not be here tonight if it weren’t for Josh, so everybody give Josh a big f*cking round of applause, please.”
The crowd responded accordingly, prompting Grohl to continue, albeit with a momentary pause to compose himself, seemingly holding back tears.
He proceeded:
“Now, I have to say that this is…something I never thought I’d have to do.”
After a brief pause, he added:
“I’m going to try to do it."
"Taylor wrote this song. We used to sing it together, so I’m going to do it for him tonight.”
With that, he proceeded to perform "Cold Day In The Sun"—a track penned and originally sung by Hawkins and featured on the band's 2005 album In Your Honor.
As Grohl sang and played his acoustic guitar, a silhouette of a hawk appeared on a screen behind him.
When the song ended, Grohl concluded with the words:
"That was for you, Taylor."
