Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is under fire from angry fans after he sat down with Focus on the Family, an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group, for a conversation about faith and marriage.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has come under fire from angry fans after he sat down with Focus on the Family, an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group, for a conversation about faith and marriage.

Cousins engaged in a discussion with Focus On The Family's Chief Operating Officer Ken Windebank. The conversation revolved around Cousins' faith and the significance of marriage. Notably, Focus On The Family espouses fundamentalist Christian beliefs, including anti-LGBTQ+ stances and support for conversion therapy, among other contentious positions.

During the half-hour dialogue, Cousins didn't explicitly delve into LGBTQ+ matters. Still, his alignment with Focus On The Family's values becomes apparent through his rhetoric.

He shared thoughts on the consequences of life choices, echoing a belief in reaping outcomes based on actions taken:

"There are consequences to the choices you make in life. Good or bad. And if you sow good things you’ll reap good things. But if you sow poor decisions, you’ll reap poor decisions."

And at another point, he addressed his discomfort with how culture has drifted away from matters of faith, referencing one of his mentors within the organization:

“He challenged us to understand that that meant following Jesus, even if it cost you something. So if culture goes this way and Jesus went this way, even if it cost you something. I’m going to be a fully devoted follower, even if it cost me something."
"I’m going to trust him and build my life on his truth."

A video of the conversation is included below.

Cousins, in past comments, has hinted at socially conservative views. His sentiments about a hypothetical gay teammate—to that, he said "nobody's perfect"—coupled with his recent discourse aligning with Focus On The Family, raise concerns about his stance on LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion in sports.

Many have criticized him and the partnership as a result.

Cousins' partnership with Focus on the Family clashes with the values upheld by the Vikings, a team that places importance on LGBTQ+ inclusivity.

Notably, the Vikings demonstrate a commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity within their organization, boasting openly LGBTQ+ personnel and supporting various pro-LGBTQ+ initiatives.

In stark contrast, Focus On The Family maintains rigid and discriminatory beliefs regarding homosexuality and transgender individuals. Their views portray marriage as solely between a man and a woman, disregarding the LGBTQ+ community's rights and experiences.

The organization's stance, explicitly anti-gay and transphobic, is evident in their published materials and interactions with outlets like Outsports, which first reported the news of Cousins' partnership, and where they reinforce harmful rhetoric about sexual orientation and identity.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who arrived in the U.S. in 2012, was labeled a threat in 2019 due to an alleged connection to MS-13. He spent months in detention before an immigration judge found he had a credible fear of persecution—not from MS-13, but from a rival group, Barrio 18, which he said had been extorting his family.
